The Grass is Greener Where you Water it.
The first time I heard the quote, “The grass is greener where you water it,” I paused.
It wasn’t just any kind of pause, it was a special moment where I saw the world around me in a different light. Specifically my relationships. How was I watering/investing/nurturing my relationships with others, and wait wait wait… how was I watering/investing/nurturing myself?
Needless to say it resonated big time, and challenged me to do some personal inquiry. I wrote this quote on my bathroom mirror and I liked it. I liked it so much more than its “original” counterpart, “the grass is always greener on the other side.” The biggest difference between the two quotes, as I see it, is accountability. This matter of accountability and where we focus our attention can be a total game changer in our perspective.
The straight up truth is - that what’s on the “other side” is out of our control. I’ve learnt this in a very raw, real and potent way from my friends/cancer survivor students.
The ultimate curve ball of hearing the words you have cancer! Eeeeeish! Or any life altering experience for that matter - a separation, a job loss, an illness of any kind… the list is endless.
So then what? Your clock is still ticking, you are still here and how are you going to focus your thoughts, your energy and your time? Time is precious.
Your response to that question is private, and personal. However, if you are reading this right now, I encourage you to put this thought into action. Water what you want to foster, to love and nourish. Rather than spreading your water too thin, or constantly comparing your circumstance to the greener grass on the “other side.” There is such beauty in watering/investing/nurturing what you have that’s most dear.
Cherish that.
In this picture you will see a small piece of paper with this quote - I placed one on each mat for my students at yoga one day. I didn’t realize it would hit home as much as it did. I found out a few years later that my dear friend/student Carri still has this same note posted in her kitchen, where she looks at it every day.
My wish is that it will bring you hope too. Here’s to watering what we cherish most.
With love,
Kelly
